The Trump administration has just released the news and it looks like Michelle Obama’s Lunch Program is going straight in the garbage where it belongs. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) just announced that Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue is expected to unveil new flexibility for schools in how they meet federal nutrition standards for school lunches on Monday.
Perdue and Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) intend to make their announcement in Leesburg, Virginia at Catoctin Elementary School. They plan to eat lunch with the students. The lunch program was considered a large part of Michelle’s initiative to curb childhood obesity and largely considered a failure. Many schools either ceased to participate at all foregoing federal dollars in an effort to be free of the restrictive program.
Republicans and Democrats alike have been trying to introduce legislation to do away with the program but until President Trump was elected it was unsuccessful. Just last year, Roberts introduced legislation with Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) last year to give schools two more years to meet new reductions in sodium, but the bill never passed.
Of course, there are detractors among Obama’s supporters and they have been quick to push back. Among them, have been the American Heart Association. The group’s CEO, Nancy Brown, said the current standards are already working and that 99% percent of schools are in compliance. Of course, there was no mention of the schools that had dropped the program altogether, or of the percentage of waste the school incurred due to kids refusing to eat what is served.
Brown stated –
“Improving children’s health should be a top priority for the USDA, and serving more nutritious foods in schools is a clear-cut way to accomplish this goal. Rather than altering the current path forward, we hope the agency focuses more on providing technical assistance that can help schools get across the finish line, if they haven’t done so already.”
Students across the nation clearly did not share Brown’s opinion. As throughout the years of the Obama’s regime in Washington, social media was filled with tons of students expressing their extreme displeasure at the small portions and downright disgusting food that passed for “healthy” in public schools across the nation. Many are cheering at the possibility of getting rid of the program.
